This research proposal is for the further development of controllable liquid crystal permselective membranes and controlled release devices for the separation and manipulation of a wide range of molecules in the gas and liquid phase. The aim is to synthesise a range of cyclic and linear SCLC polysiloxanes and LC eleastomers using the expertise of the Hull group, and the incorporation of these materials in specialised devices. These systems will be evaluated as to their performance in separation membranes by the Birmingham group and, in some cases, will be developed and evaluated as novel molecular sensors. This structure/property correlation study will establish the main features of both the materials and device configurations necessary to construct potentially useful membrane/sensor devices. The industrial assistance to both the Hull and Birmingham groups throughout the programme. The most effective liquid crystals and device architectures will be exploited in micro-FIA and micro-TASS systems for molecular processing, separation and detection.
