Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will involve the development of a flexible fully coupled two dimensional gas chromatograph for high speed and high resolution chromatography. The critical thermal modulating interface, coupling primary to secondary column will be developed to operate at high frequency allowing the unique coupling of two micro bore capillary columns, producing estimated peak capacities of around 10-5. This interface will be operated using a short length of capillary column thermally modulated by pulses of laser light passed down the inside of the capillary itself, propagated by the capillary's own waveguide properties. Thermal modulation will be enhanced by the use of stationary phases optically doped to maximize light absorption. High speed data capture coupled to visualization software will allow real-time monitoring of the separation process.
