Summary on Grant Application Form
The project sets out to study a duct made of a foam core sandwiched between two parallel plates at uniform temperatures. The foam will be assumed to consist of uniform distributed, equal-sized unit cells, which describes the commercially available aluminium foam. Each unit cell consists of a series of equivalent cylinders as its edges. Closed form solutions for the overall heat transfer coefficient, pressure drop and temperature distribution in the duct will be obtained. The acoustic behaviour of the foam inside the duct will be modelled for noise control. Experimental measurements on model ducts will be undertaken in a lab set-up to validate the predictions. The relationships will eventually be undertaken in a lab set-up to analyse and guide the design of optimum foam microstructures that would maximise heat transfer per unit pumping power. The experimentally-validated analytical model will be applied to analyse two prototypical designs of compact exchangers: heat sink for the next generation multi-chip modules and multi-later-air-fuel exchanger for aeronautical applications.
