Summary on Grant Application Form
A detailed study of radar clutter data will be performed. First from the perspective of probability density functions (pdf), then from the perspective of higher order and fractional statistics and finally using techniques drawn from the theory of nonlinear dynamics. The clutter data will be provided by the two collaborating organisations. A broad comparison of the techniques will be undertaken in order to make recommendations as to which would be most appropriate in specific application areas. In the second stage of the study, a range of nonlinear detectors will be developed to exploit the above. In particular: the performance of a fully-adaptive maximum-likelihood detector will be assessed; Volterra series predictors will be used to exploit the higher order statistical structure of the clutter; radial basis function/likelihood ratio detectors will also be investigated and related to the maximum likelihood detector. A comparative study of the detectors will be undertaken and recommendations will be made as to appropriate application areas.
