Summary on Grant Application Form
The finite volume (FV) method offers a number of potential advantages over the conventional finite element (FE) method in numerical structural analysis. These advantages have been identified by recent research work which has focussed on developing FV based structural analysis software capable of determining the small strain deformation of loaded structures. In addition, the FV approach to structural analysis could, in future, be integrated with existing FV based computational fluid dynamics software to provide a facility for analysing complex problems involving the interaction of deforming structures and moving fluids. The research outlined in this proposal aims to extend the current capabilities of the structural FV method to enable the large strain deformation of compressible and incompressible solids to be determined. The work will involve developing an enhanced mathematical formulation of the FV method that includes finite strain deformation together with the development and testing of a software implementation of this formulation.
