Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will study the influence of secondary flow and turbulence on flat beds, fixed sediment beds and mobile beds in meandering channel for overbank flows by 3 components of velocity using a laser Doppler velocimeter (LDA) system and digital photogrammetry to derive bed morphology. Use will be made of the Flood Channel Facility, (FCF), HR Wallinford and a Loughborough University flume. The key objectives will be to obtain accurate measurements of three components of velocity, Reynolds stresses and bed forms in each case. The experiment data will be useful in identifying the underlying mechanisms and for bench-marking 3-D numerical simulation models of flows in complex cross sections with and without sediment transport.
