We wish to study using STM the atomic and nm scale morphology of ultrathin magnetic structures prepared by MBE. Concurrent measurements of the spin reversal process and magnetic anistropy behaviour will be made using magneto-optical techniques in order to identify how the morphology revealed by STM controls magnetic properties and the reversal process in continuous films. In-situ piezoelectric scanning stage shutters will be used to create single and multiple steps of controlled height- i.e. thickness modulated structures-in order to allow systematic study of the effects of steps on the reversal process and the associated key magnetic parameters (spin reorientation, coercive and saturation fields). It is also proposed to prepare nanoscale structures on natural template structures on the nanoscale. Ex-situ studies of the vector reversal process and time dependent measurements ns scale) will be carried out. Very recently the Cambridge group and other groups have shown that unexpectedly strong variations in the magnetic properties of ultrathin magnetic scales occur which directly relate to the presence of atomic scale structures.
