IBD provides the opportunity to deposit very pure, isotope-specific thin films and multilayers, Such a facility is essentially unique and is exciting for magnetism because it will allow, for instance, the convenient and sensitive investigation of magnetism at the monolayer level by Mossbauer spectroscopy. This will be a main technique used in the characterisation of anistropy and magnetism in some selected Fe-based multilayers and alloys containing 100% enriched 57Fe. The Salford IPD system has facilities to produce a wide range of microstructures from those typical of sputter-deposition to those obtained in MBE deposition. Such structures and materials will also be characterised by in-situ STM/AFM and XPS, and ex-situ magnetometry, MXCD, BLS, TEM, and PEELS and X-ray diffraction and reflectometry. The IBD fabrication will be complimented by magnetron sputter-depositions.
