Summary on Grant Application Form
Empirically-based correlations for the blow-off stability of single component subsonic combusting jets do not admit reliable extrapolation to supersonic jets of H2/CO mixtures. CFD-based prediction methods are presently constrained by both the complexity of the turbulent mixing processes in the under-expanded jet and the absence of spatially-and temporally-resolved diagnostic data. The proposed programme combines high speed flow visualisation, detailed probing measurement and pulsed-laser imaging diagnostics to characterise mixing and entrainment in the lift-off and stabilisation zones of the H2/CO jet. These data will be used to develop and test multi-scalar pdf methods for the modelling of partially-premixed combustion in these mixtures and their implications for blow-off stability.
