There is a need to transfer rapidly developing FE model updating technology to the civil engineering structural dynamics sector. Based on prototype modal testing, FE model updating has its long-term potential for improving the reliability of numerical modelling whilst reducing its cost. Prototype model testing in civil engineering is experimental field work requiring full data acquisition and analysis systems to be available during testing. The development of such an 'in-situ' facility will be carried out. This will allow fast field model testing producing high quality experimental data necessary for successful FE model updating. Such a facility will then be used in field model testing and FE model updating of a new footbridge in London. Furthermore, existing data from two concrete floors already tested will be used for automated FE model updating. The outcome of these exercises will be more reliable FE models which not only identify but also quantify various unforeseen aspects of dynamic behaviour. Experience from these exercises will enable an assessment of performance of updating technology in solving civil structural dynamics problems. Finally, a unique research facility, optimsed for field testing, will be created in the UK for future vibration serviceability and damage detection research.
