We aim to build upon our recent successes in applying chemometric and other techniques to the rapid analysis of spectra from complex chemical and biotechnological systems of industrial importance.Current neural and statistical methods to not provide explicit information about the form of their predictive models. Genetic Programming (GP) is a technique in evolutionary computing with two significant advantages over such methods: it explores a much larger solution space, and provides an explicit model of relationships found. Although the method will be generically applicable to all spectroscopes, we will apply GP to the deconvolution of FT-IR and Ramen spectra of microbes and their metabolites, calibrating against HPLC. The explicit resultant models will extract and reveal the relevant spectra features necessary to predict yield, and permitting their interpretation in terms of chemical structure. Data processing to extract sand compress potential spectral features is important prior to applying GP, and we will study the effectiveness of a variety of such methods. We have the opportunity of employing a named RA who will make available his own GP package as a prototype for initial investigation, and we will have access to software from our proposed industrial collaborator, which combines GP with fuzzy logic.
