Summary on Grant Application Form
The stability of magnetic properties in humid atmospheres and the additional costs of protective coatings for Nd-Fe-B magnets are still factors inhibiting wider applications. The current proposal seeks to develop further a novel Zn coating technique which has been shown to enhance the corrosion protection of Nd-Fe-B magnets. In contrast with existing coating techniques for Nd-Fe-B, the proposed process is less complex, lower cost and is capable of translation into volume manufacture. In a parallel study it is proposed to apply the same Zn deposition process to the coating of Nd-Fd-B powders. Micron sized Nd-Fe-B powders with uniform outer layers designed to aid sintering and optimise domain dynamics would be the ideal starting material for the manufacture of compacted magnets. The work will allow greater understanding of the role of powder coating in both sintered and bonded magnet manufacture and establish a new process for nanometre coating. For both the corrosion protection and powder coating work, the proposal will develop a process technology under pinned by detailed scientific understanding. Successful development of the coating technique will create UK opportunities to supply stable coated powders and corrosion protected magnets to the world market.
