This project is concerned with a study of the physical and magnetic properties of advanced magnetic pigments used in magnetic recording systems. In addition to their use in current advanced video formats it is envisaged that metal particle based tapes will constitute over half the world's use of flexible digital storage media by the year 2000. Hence the maintenance of the UK expertise base in this key area is essential. In the project itself we will seek to undertake research which will give an improved understanding of coercivity mechanisms in MP pigments. Specifically we will examine the role of particle size, morphology and the nature of surface coatings in producing particles with coercivities in excess of 2 kOe. This will be achieved by developing an in-house capability to produce materials with similar properties to these produced by commercial suppliers. To this end an initial study of commercial pigments will be pre-requisite. Metal particle systems with a range of physical properties will be prepared with varying particle size, aspect ratio and surface coatings which will be studied using a well established advanced magnetic measurement techniques. Physical and chemical characterisation will be provided through an existing collaboration with the CSIC in Madrid.
