Summary on Grant Application Form
Problems of water quality in estuaries can occur due to the impoundment of saline water behind a weir or barrage. The entrainment of such an entrapped saline wedge will be monitored in the laboratory in a dedicated flume 17m x 0.75m x 0.75m. The temporal development of the layer, and its removal, will be measured using an LDA system, with a series of Salinity Meters. It is intended that this will allow a further understanding of the entrainment process and provide a means by which this can be estimated.A CFD model of the entrapped wedge will be set up. Model calibration will be achieved using data held by the research team.
