Summary on Grant Application Form
Flame strain, radiative cooling and non-adiabatic conditions exist in all industrial combustors and can affect significantly the aerodynamic/combustion characteristics which, in turn, influence NOx emissions. This proposal aims to improve upon the predictive capabilities of an existing CFD code based on a non-equilibrum strained flamelet combustion model coupled with a Reynolds-stress model for tubulence by incorporating the effects of radiative heat loss into flamelet modelling. The laminar flamelet calculations with detailed chemistry will be performed using CHEMKIN, which will be modified to account for the radiative heat loss by adding a source term to enthalpy equation. The effects of radiative heat loss will then be implemented in a mixedness-reactedness strained flamelet model by introducing a third flamelet parameter, the radiative coefficient, and a joint pdf of all three flamelet parameters. Refinement of the NO post-processor will be carried out to take into account the effect of turbulence/chemistry interactions by a pdf approach with two variables. Validation of aerodynamics, combustion and NO predictions will be carried out against measurements in industrially-relevant combustion systems reported in the literature.
