Summary on Grant Application Form
The characterisation of elementary reactions of sulphur containing radicals that are of significance in combustion is very poor. The proposed research is aimed at measuring and modelling rate coefficients for reactions that have been identified as important. The experiments will be performed at temperatures between 300 and 800K, using laser flash photolysis coupled with laser induced fluorescence. Modelling will be performed using recently developed implementations of the master equation, that can describe the interactions between reaction of an energised species and reaction and that is particularly suited to some of the reactions proposed for study. The programme includes measurements of the rates of H and OH with SO2, of H with H2S and reactions of SO and NS radicals. The resulting rate data will be incorporated in the Leeds Database, that is made available to industrial collaborators, assessed by an international evaluation panel, coordinated from the University of Leeds and incorporated in a mechanism being developed for C/H/O/N/S chemistry which will be available on the World Wide Web.
