To enhance efficiency, profitability and customer service, and in response to regulatory pressure, the water industry is starting to adopt machine intelligence technologies. The potential for these technologies to provide significant advances in the application of modelling to water industry systems rests on their ability to automate learning and evolve models of complex physical phenomena, even in the presence of noisy data, and to tackle non-linear decision-making problems. Genetic programming is such a technology. It is a descendent of Genetic Algorithms, but in many ways it is more of a generalisation than a specialisation of its parent discipline. These biologically inspired adaptive computer methods are based on the principles of natural selection and genetic recombination. They evolve potential solutions that learn about the problem domain and, assuming long enough simulation, adapt perfectly to their environments (objectives and constraints). This research proposal combines theoretical and practical work in Engineering and Computing to research and develop novel Genetic Programming based systems for practical application in the water industry. The proposed research work is a natural progression from previous research focused on the more restricted form of Evolutionary Computing known as Genetic Algorithms.
