Summary on Grant Application Form
Stabilised zirconias are important technological materials which have applications as ceramics, thermal barrier coatings, ionic conductors and catalysts. However, the stabilisation process is still ill-understood and may result in fine scale inhomogeneities. XANES and ELNES provide site specific information on the local atomic environment and are invaluable techniques for studying these materials. XANES can be studied on most edges but with poor spatial resolution while ELNES can be studied only on low energy edges but with sub-nanometre spatial resolution. The project will compare XANES and ELNES from all available edges as a function of dopant concentration in the Y203-Zr02 system to identify the changes and how they are correlated. The effects of vacancies on the oxygen sub-lattice and substitution on the metal sub-lattice will be identified by including samples doped with Ce02, La203 and Hf02 for comparison with one of the Y203 samples. Theoretical modelling will be used to interpret the spectra and the trends observed. The information available with high spatial resolution (i.e. that from ELNES alone) will be identified. The techniques developed will be demonstrated on two industrially relevant systems. One is the Ce02-Zr02 system used in car exhaust systems and the other is a Zr02-C composite.
