The main objective of this project is to develop a computational framework for direct simulation of granule dynamics associated with low pressure type agglomeration processes, typical for fluidised beds or mixer type agglomerators. The computational model will enable direct simulation of granule properties related to complex interactions between the mobile liquid phase and a large number of primary particles.The main aspects of the computational model are:(i) combined finite/discrete element approach will be utilised to model interaction between large number of primary particles and/or fluid phase,(ii) numerical model for mobile fluid phase will allow for complex and evolving interfaces between the wetting liquid, air and primary particles, separation and merging of surfaces, and surface tension effects. This will be achieved within a fully automatic environment based on moving meshes and adaptive strategies.Extensive numerical simulations will aid in establishing the complex relationship between the microstructure and mechanical properties, and provide a means of optimising the process parameters, thus ensuring the fitness for purpose of the final product. Apart from a significant impact on improved production methods and product performance, this will allow for reduced lead times and costs for the development of new products based on agglomeration processing
