Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the proposed research project is to determine the hardware and software requirements for a power-electronic interface between medium-to-large scale PV arrays and the 3-phase network, consisting of a number of modular DC/DC converters to a common high-voltage DC link, with a single 3-phase voltage-source inverter returning AC power of good quality to the local supply grid. After a study of existing PV systems the most appropriate architecture will be established in order to select the 'best' topology of the DC/DC converter. Power quality and protection issues will be investigated using the converter from a state-of-the-art commercially manufactured variable-speed drive, and control algorithms developed and implemented. At the same time DC/DC converter modules will be constructed and tested, using a laboratory-based PV simulator. After correct operation and appropriate control algorithms have been established, a number of modules will be combined with the network bridge to provide a research tool for development of coordinated control of the interface, including maximum power tracking for the individual modules and sensing of islanding operation. The developed technology will form the basis for the design of a range of cost-effective interface units for use in medium and large scale PV systemsThe aim of the proposed research project is to determine the hardware and software requirements for a power-electronic interface between medium-to-large scale PV arrays and the 3-phase network, consisting of a number of modular DC/DC converters connected to a common high-voltage DC link, with a single 3-ohase voltage-source inverter returning AC power of good quality to the local supply grid.
