Summary on Grant Application Form
Interest in the use of cement bound materials has been given new impetus by recent research using precracking techniques to reduce the problem of reflective cracking. Fibre reinforced cement bound roadbase (FRCBR) takes this development a stage further. An initial study indicates that the rate of reduction in load transfer capacity across cracks in a cement bound roadbase may be significantly slowed by the inclusion of fibre reinforcement. This contrasts with the current position in which cracks deteriorate rapidly and propogate through overlying asphalt layers causing reflective cracking. The potential for the fibre reinforced material is therefore to dramatically reduce the thickness of asphalt required, saving on a relatively expensive material. The proposed research involves fundamental materials and testing, looking at variables such as fibre type and content and cement bound material strength. It also inlcudes a small scale wheel tracking and use of Nottingham University's pavement test facility as well as practical trials of the full scale mixing and laying process. Its prime deliverable will be a material and pavement design system in the form of a draft specification and standard and the initiation of a long term pavement trial.
