Measurement of the inelastic neutron scattering spectrum from silicate glasses in the low-energy (0-20meV) regime as a function of chemical composition and temperature. Experiments will be performed using the PRISMA and MARI spectrometers at the ISIS neutron scattering facility, and will build upon some very successful pilot experiments performed by the applicants. The results will be analysed theoretically using the rigid unit model developed by the applicants to explain the vibrational spectra and stability of crystalline silicates. The end result will be to identify the microscopic origin of the Boson peak and the low-energy (0-5 meV) relaxation modes, and to identify the origin of the tunnelling modes seen at low temperatures. Experiments and calculations will also be performed on crystalline silicates with very large unit cells for comparison.
