Prior grain boundaries have both the incentive, due to gradients in microstructure and the opportunity, because of the high angle boundary, to be significant sites for the nucleation of recrystallisation in aluminium. Despite this, they have little attention compared with the cube texture nuclei and particle stimulated nucleation. The proposed work will involve modelling of both the development of the deformed structure adjoining the boundary and the early stages of the recrystallisation process. This will be closely linked to an experimental programme using, mainly, bi-crystals to determine the real origin of grain boundary nuclei. Finite element modelling will be used for prediction of the deformed state in the vicinity of grain boundaries. A rational set of bi- and tri-crystals, prepared by diffusion bonding, will be deformed in plane strain and their as-deformed structure and subsequent recrystallisation studied by electron microscopy.
