We propose to construct a new user facility on station 9.3 of the Daresbury Synchrotron Radiation Source for XAS and XRD studies of crystalline and disordered samples held in diamond anvil high pressure cells. This facility named HI-PREXX will include a dispersive XAS monochromator and detector, CCD and image plate detectors, a diamond anvil cell alignment stage and a ruby laser system for in-situ pressure determination. We propose to carry out collaborative research projects with selected high potential users of HI-PREXX during the on-line commissioning phase. These projects include studies of III-V semiconductors, GaN and InGaN, cation diffusion in chalcogenide glasses, high Tc superconductors and rare earth metaphosphate glasses.This work will result in a unique facility that will contribute, at the cutting edge of science, to a wide range of EPSRC programme.
