We propose research leading to the realisation of optical systems capable of carrying out transient deformation measurement and vibration modal analysis in the industrial environment, including the understanding of vibrational power flow and predicting the radiation of acoustic energy. The proposal is based on the novel concept of an interformeter capable of recording in parallel vibrational information form a line on a test0object, scanning that line across the test-object, and hence deriving the complete vibration map. The instrument uses a fibre-optic interferometer with phase-stepping signal processing and CCD detector. The instrument is capable of operating with low power, low cost CW laser sources and is intended for routine use by non-specialist personnel. And overall objective is to reduce the time taken for modal analysis on a typical component by an order of magnitude, to less than a working day.
