This proposal investigates the use of the Landau-Placzek ratio (LPR) as a new approach to distributed temperature sensing and as a means to design and demonstrate a distributed strain sensor that for the first time will be independent of temperature effects. Existing distributed temperature sensors have been based on Raman scattering and the performance of commercial instruments now approach the theoretical limits. The Landau-Placzek ratio method is based on measuring the ratios of the intensity of the Rayleigh scattered light and Brillouin scattered light. Owing to the Brillouin signal level being an order of magnitude larger than the Raman signal and also because the small frequency shift between the Brillouin signal and the Rayleigh allows both to be close to the lowest loss region of silica fibre, the theoretical range of such systems as compared to the Raman based method is increased. This work forms part of a LINK-programme involving collaboration with York sensors Ltd and Pirelli General Ltd.
