Summary on Grant Application Form
THIS PROJECT IS A JOINT ENDEAVOR BETWEEN LANCASTER UNIVERSITY AND STAFFORDSHIRE UNIVERSITY.This project addresses the human factor issues surrounding the development of user interfaces for distributed mobile applications. The project focuses on the issues of communication and co-operation and the relationship between the user interface and the supporting infrastructure. Usability issues arising from network delays and reliability will be addressed with a particular emphasis on uncovering techniques which can seamlessly manage fluctuations in the quality of service provided by the supporting infrastructure. The investigation will be driven by focusing on advanced mobile applications. Work will involve a series of studies of the use of these applications and the derivation of requirements. Applications will include the support of mobile field engineers, members of the emergency services and the on-going development of a computer based tourist guide. These applications are selected for their coverage of both professional and non-professional users. The requirements developed during the project will be used to outline and prototype a toolkit to allow the rapid development of user interfaces and a supporting infrastructure. The development of both these facilities seeks to allow human factors to influence the provision of services at all levels of the mobile infrastructure.
