Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this research proposal is to progress novel modulation schemes and optical fibre dispersion management methods for WDM of 10 Gbit/s TDM optical communication channels in medium-haul and long-haul optically amplified fibre links. The programme targets two key RZ modulation formats, solitons and RZ phase-modulated pulses, addressing both anomalous and normal dispersion regimes of optical fibre. Applications to both pre-installed systems, where upgrade via dispersion compensation with fibre or fibre gratings may be necessary, and new systems, where novel dispersion map design is possible, will be considered. The performance of new system designs will be evaluated numerically. Considerations of primary importance will be RZ pulse collision, pseudo-phase-matched four-wave-mixing, continuum generation, polarisation mode dispersion, pre and periodic pulse chirping, and third-order dispersion.Extensive numerical modelling using an established program, supported by analysis using new mathematical techniques, will form the basis for the programme. A new, interactive dynamic simulation environment for WDM optical fibre communications systems will be developed.
