The production of the simplest atom of antimatter, antihydrogen, at very low energies is one of the most fundamental goals of atomic physics. Such an achievement will facilitate, in particular, studies of the spectroscopic properties of antihydrgen, and allow detailed comparisons with the same quantities in ordinary hydrogen. These measurements can be used to test some of the symmetry principles which lie at the heart of our understanding of the Universe.A large multinational collaboration, ATHENA, has been established whose aim is to produce and study cold hydrogen at CERN's newly announced antiproton source, the Antiproton Decelerator. The UK contribution to this effort will be via the provision of a flexible, high-intensity positron accumulator which will enable large (109- 1010) burst of positrons to be delivered to the ATHENA antihydrogen formation apparatus.This important basic research project, which includes the training of young scientists in several leading edge technologies, is consistent with the stated EPSRC mission.
