Summary on Grant Application Form
This programme of work is aimed at addressing the strategic Make vs Buy ( MvB) decision. The research is not aimed at the management of the supply chain but at supporting the development of a manufacturing strategy by tackling one of the fundamental strategic questions. It seeks to develop a methodology which will enable manufacturing companies to answer the question. Should this part of process be sources in-house of brought from a supplier? . This is distinct from, but builds upon, previous work which will aim to blend the results of the previous work together with new knowledge into an integrated MvB methodology of provide decision support at the level of sourcing decisions for specific parts and processes. The main research method will be action research, following the well proven approach used by previous Cambridge projects in the manufacturing strategy field. The industrial output will be a MvB decision making methodology and guidelines for its use within manufacturing companies; the academic output will be an increased understanding of the factors affecting the MvB decision and an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses and general applicability of the MvB methodology.
