Summary on Grant Application Form
Thin film crystalline Si (TFCS) is a promising material for low-cost solar cells if it can be deposited in sufficient thickness and structural/electronic quality on low-cost substrates, using scaleable process. This collaborative project between South Bank University, Imperial College, CCLRC (Central Laser Facility) and BP solar is aimed at Imperial College, CCLRC (Central Laser Facility) and BP Solar is aimed at investigating such an approach on glass and glass-like substrates using the novel technique of ECR plasma CVD in combination with innovative methods of seeding crystalline growth. The latter will include in-situ techniques and ex-situ excimer laser crystallization. Characterization of film microstructure and electronic properties using a wide range of methods including relatively new SEM (scanning electron microscope) EBIC aid in optimising growth and processing. TFCS solar cells will be fabricated in ECR-prepared structures for the first time.
