CREST proposes to work with Microtech Ltd. of Gateshead to identify the optimal inverter design and system configuration for building integrated, grid connected photovoltaic applications.The research will identify the most appropriate methodology for implementation of the network connection of photovoltaics through a systems approach to the power conversion, power quality and safety issues. Inverting elements can be designed to be distributed throughout a building integrated array or can be located on modules.Systems to be investigated include both string and module converters. The grid interface can be integrated with the inverters, or located separately at the building electricity supply connection. The research program will evaluate the economics of these different approaches and thereby identify the most promising product for further development by Micro Tech.In particular CREST proposes to investigate the technical requirements for , and the operational performance of, four configurations of grid connected PV Systems and to produce a functional specification and costing for the manufacture of each configuration. These results will be achieved in part through the development of a comprehensive system model. Critical inputs of PV inverter and grid interface cost will be made by Microtech.
