Neoliacinic acid is an architecturally complex plant metabolite with potential anti-cancer activity. The unusual tricyclic structure and dense functionality present in neoliacinic acid coupled with its putative biological activity, make it a highly attractive target for synthesis. In spite of this, there have been few previous studies concerning the synthesis neoliacinic acid.The aim of the proposed research is the construction of the natural product by a route that is both efficient and conceptually novel. In the proposed synthesis, the tricyclic core of neoliacinic acid will be constructed using new catalytic reactions which involve highly reactive metal carbenoid intermediates.Metal-mediated reactions will also be used for the controlled introduction of the dense array of oxygen-containing functional groups found tin the natural product. The proposed synthesis of neoliacinic acid will be distinctive in terms of the synthetic strategy and the catalytic reactions used.
