Summary on Grant Application Form
Objective 1.1 Quantify in detail the extent to which soliton transmission is robust against polarisation mode dispersion (PMD). Solitons will be launched into fibres exhibiting a range of PMD behaviour. Their polarisation evolution along the fibre will be monitored by our recently developed first polarimetric optical time domain reflectometer (POTDR) at the transmitter end and by a polarimeter at the far end. The results will also provide a very valuable test of the reliability of current models for the statistical variation in birefringence used in solitan transmission codes. Objective 1.2 Investigate the feasibility of (1) polarisation division multiplexing (PDM) in soliton transmission. Soliton signals in orthogonal polarisation directions will be launched into a recirculating loop alternatively and their polarisation evolution will be monitored as above. In this way the effect of polarisation dependent loss (PDL) in the fibre on the polarisation propagation of soliton will be assessed and possible methods to solve this problem can be tested and (2) 40Gb/s soliton transmission over 200km of installed standard (non-dispersion shifted) fibre suing combined PDM and TDM.Objective 2 A differential Polarisation Shift Keying (DPOLSK) transmission system will be implemented at 140 Mb/s using a Stokes receiver modelled on our POTDR. This 'proof of principle' test bed will be used to carry out definitive transmission measurements to evaluate the feasibility of using DPOLSK to over come the chromatic dispersion problem at 1.5um in the vast network of installed standard fibre. This test bed will also provide the first opportunity to put the large body of literature on theoretical models of different types of polarisation shift keying transmission schemes to real experimental tests. Definitive transmission measurements will be made on a number of key theoretical models.
