Despite advances in nonlinear control theory within the UK and elsewhere, the effective control of nonlinear engineering processes remains a difficult and largely unsolved problem. Yet the economic payoffs in meeting tight performance specifications for inherently nonlinear dynamical processes are very considerable. On the theory side, the proposed research seeks to draw together three related approaches to nonlinear control within the Centre into one coherent generic methodology; that is, a synergy is sought from the three strands of Physical Model Based Control, Nonlinear Generalised Predictive Control and Nonlinear Inverse Models. On the experimental side, the proposed research programme has identified a major manufacturing problem that would benefit from such control. This is a radial thickness control problem identified by BICC Wrexham where the extrusion dynamics are both multivariable and nonlinear. This will provide a good experimental demonstration of the methodology. Implementation of the nonlinear controller on a PC3000 multiloop controller is to be facilitated by Eurotherm, a UK vendor control company. Both BICC and Eurotherm regard this proposal as a strategic collaboration and are committing significant resources to the project.
