We propose to use neutron transmission measurements to determine a two dimensional map of the stress free lattice parameter across component slices, at high rates of data acquisition. This technique promises a major breakthrough for measurements where there may be a spatial variation in the stress free lattice parameter: e.g. for weldments (easily the most popular type of problem currently tackled by neutron diffraction). At present, such measurements can only be obtained by time-consuming sectioning of the test-piece into small stress-free parts.The development of the necessary pixellated transmission instrument will also open up applications in many other materials areas. e.g. the speed of data acquisition will enable structural information to be recorded for time-dependent behaviour, such as ageing and thermal cycling.A simple prototype transmission detector has already been tested on the ENGIN instrument at ISIS. Through this proposal we aim to build a dedicated, pixellated transmission detector array with a spatial resolution of 2mm, and to develop the necessary data analysis software to enable `Rietveld' style analysis of the transmission spectra.
