Summary on Grant Application Form
The project combines fundamental studies of the CdTe-Cds system with a detailed study of the electrodeposition route to thin film IT-VI solar cells. The collaboration between Bath, Cranfield, BP Solar and Pilkington will provide new information on the structural and electronic properties of films prepared by electrodeposition facilitating a breakthrough to AM 1.5 efficiencies of 15% and beyond. The CdS-CdTe phase diagram will be established and the diffusion of S,T,C,Cl in CdS/CdTe will be characterised. The effect of kinetics and mass transfer on the electrodeposition process will be studied and electrodeposited films will be characterised fully. Test cells will be fabricated and measures by BP Solar. Pilkington will provide alternative substrates for the deposition process. Novel structure (e.g CdS free CdTe cells ) will be fabricated and tested.
