The experimental programme will consist of studies of a number of chlorination (principally) and chlorosulphonation (additionally) reactions utilizing the photochemistry of sulphuryl chloride. Laboratory-scale preparative photochlorinations and chlorosulphonations will be carried out, and the effects of wavelength and temperature on product yields determined. The effects of added initiators and catalysts will also be studied. The results will be compared with those from conventional, thermally induced chlorinations and chlorosulphonations. Supplementary studies and chlorinations of simple aliphatic carboxylic acids, e.g. 2-chloropropionic acid, which yield a number of important chemical intermediates. At all stages, the commercial potential of the reactions studied will be assessed, and scale-up for promising processes undertaken by the collaborating company, A. H. Marks and Co.Ltd.
