Summary on Grant Application Form
There has been a growing interest in developing and applying knowledge based technologies to automate hazard identification methods which have traditionally been carried out manually. A critical issue is collecting knowledge about the processes. Previous experience and failure cases provide one of the most important sources of knowledge and are normally stored in databases. However the volume of data is normally too large for manual analysis and the data contents tend to be incomplete, complex in structure and types, dynamic, redundant, noisy, and sparse. This results in the databases being mainly used for archive and retrieval. The goal of this research project is to develop data mining technologies and integrate systems to help make maximum use of information by extracting knowledge of the form of rules to be used by expert systems and experts, interpreting data which will assist in decision making. The system will combine various technologies including case and model based reasoning, neural networks, machine learning, visualisation, data modelling and database management systems.
