Summary on Grant Application Form
The project is concerned with the development of the technology for information retrieval from huge multimedia databases by content. The work will build on the existing experience at Surrey in image database retrieval by colour and texture, and on 2D and 3D motion analysis for image coding. The programme involves three main activities. First, shot detection techniques based on 3D motion estimation which should facilitate a coherent treatment of image background motion will be developed. Second, the problem of audio based segmentation of the video sound track will be addressed. Two approaches will be investigated: 1) the use of KoHonen maps and 2) sound texture segmentation based on criteria of texture homogeneity as used in image texture analysis. The third major part is concerned with acoustic object class modelling. At least fifty categories of sound will be characterised with a view to using these acoustic models as a basis for sound track annotation. Techniques for rapid retrieval from video databases by colour and texture will also be developed. The algorithms developed will be integrated into a video retrieval system with a user interface supporting complex user specified search strategies. The system will be evaluated on a large video database.
