Summary on Grant Application Form
Description of proposed research.Major problems faced by software project teams are communication, agreement about requirements and managing change. Changeability is a property of the essence of software, an inherent problem that cannot be surmounted. Requirements change for various reasons including:(i) to adapt systems to changes in the environment in which the organisation operates(ii) to reflect increased customer understanding of the system as it develops(iii) through the introduction and use of the system(iv) through changes in the business objectives.Requirement changes tend to ripple through system and impact on other requirements and the broader organisational goals. Most existing methods pay insufficient attention to the problems of uncertainty and change. These approaches are based on frameworks where requirements are frozen at fixed points within the life-cycle in order that system development can be undertaken in an orderly and controlled manner. This often leads to systems that fail to meet the real business needs of the system procurer. This proposal seeks to address the problem of managing requirements change by investigating the development of a framework for translating change scenarios to visualisations allowing the user to manipulate them directly.
