Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is concerned with the very rich non-linear dynamical behaviour displayed by SQUID rings coupled to classical low frequency (rf) resonators in the regime where the ring screening supercurrents display an almost sawtooth response with external applied flux. The programme will be concerned with both the weakly and strongly driven limits of behaviour, namely where the rf flux at the SQUID ring varies roughly between the limits of 0.001 to one flux quantum. In the weakly driven limit the interest is in the effect of the SQUID ring non-linearities on the resonant lineshape of the coupled system as a function of applied flux and the exploration of regions of very high local magnetic susceptibility of the SQUID close to the half flux quantum bias point. In the strongly driven case attention will be focused on the onset of fold bifurcations in the resonance of the coupled system. The programme will also be concerned with the role of non-linear dynamics in quantum measurement, i.e. the making of a permanent record in a classical measurement apparatus, by following experimentally the non-linear dynamics induced in the classical tank circuit as a result of quantum evolution in the SQUID ring.
