Summary on Grant Application Form
We intend to exploit recent technological interest in binary nitrides and complex oxides and attempt to synthesise new ternary oxynitride materials which may show useful electronic, magnetotransport, catalytic or optical properties. We intend to synthesise 1st row transition metal or main group oxynitrides with condensed extended structures similar to those of binary nitrides and most oxides. We will change the M : O ratio and anion site occupancies in order to tune the metal oxidation state in the case of transition metals. We also aim to exploit the novel co-ordination environments expected in oxynitrides. A range of property measurements is central to the programme.
