Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal aims to exploit the exceptional in-plane properties of graphite, especially for high thermal conductivity applications, by producing highly oriented graphite sheets by thermoplastic processing of mesophase pitch (known to be capable of producing the most highly oriented continuous carbon fibres). The extent of orientation will be quantified. Thermal relaxation of the oriented structure and oxidative crosslinking will be investigated and used to predict the conditions for retention of orientation during carbonisation. The properties of graphitised materials will be measured. A preliminary study will be made of the feasibility of bonding the sheets prior to carbonisation to produce bulk 2D graphite.
