Summary on Grant Application Form
Active steering of railway vehicles, in which conventional solid-axle whelets are replaced by steered independantly-rotating wheels, offers a number of advantages for vehicle design, but remains a highly speculative area for research. Ths ROPA proposal is to fund a feasibility study which addresses one of te important aspects necessary to achieve practical realisation of such schemes, i.e. the provision of high integrity measurements based upon simple mechanically-robust sensors which are appropriate for the arduous environment in which railway running gear must operate.
