Summary on Grant Application Form
This project aims to develop a new form of high precision imaging system suitable for quantitative 3-D profile measurement, as required for example in medical and environmental applications. The system will utilise a new low cost non-contact sensor technique pioneered at the University of Bristol, able to provide micron resolution for measurement ranges up to a few metres. The complete precision non-contact image measurement system will allow sub-surface features to be observed despite consisting of only a single compact laser diode scanning unit. The latter part of the project will assess the limits of operation possible using the system in order to lead to new speculative work in which the imaging system would be used to measure localised changes in absorption and refractive index, this allowing pollution mapping for example.
