The successful control of a bluff body wake flow represents a major goal for fluid mechanics research. A potentially successful method has been demonstrated, although a great deal of further work is necessary before it can be applied to the real world. It is the further development of this technique that represents the objective of the research.The proposed work will initially involve adaptation of a Navier-Stokes solver to obtain the unsteady flow field around a bluff body at low Reynolds number. Once this has been done a low-dimensional model of the flow will be generated, which will subsequently be used as an efficient means of investigating neural network based control schemes for the wake flow. Once trained the neural network will then be used to control the actual direct Navier-Stokes generated solution using sensors located in the flow, to give feedback, and actuation , to effect the control scheme. The results of this research will then be used for a feasibility study of wake control in the real world.
