Summary on Grant Application Form
Through examination of model aluminium alloys and commercial lithosheet, understanding will be gained of the thermochemical processing and factors of direct relevance to production of fit-for-purpose electrograined surfaces at minimum usage. This will involve understanding of allied surface and near surface layers and relevance of cellular structures which are manifested as surface texture and the inter-relationships such that ready pit initiation and propagation proceed during electrograining in nitric acid. Alloy composition and interactions between alloying elements, giving local surface roughness and segregation, through thermoelectrical processing and interfacial enrichments during `wet' processing provide the keys to understanding of the various behaviour. This will be qualified, using innovative experimental approaches, allowing feedback to the lithosheet producers which will be assisted by feedback from end-users.
