The proposal is firstly concerned with leading-edge separation on aerofoils and turbine blades; this will be carried out at finite Reynolds numbers, using an interacting boundary-layer approach. Next receptivity effects caused by freestream disturbances on this separated flow will be studied; the effects of both acoustic noise in the freestream and of freestream turbulence will be analyzed (these are likely to be quite different). This component of the proposal will partly utilize a Parabolised Stability Equations code (developed in Manchester) with the basic flow state as computed above. The study of the basic state will be broadened to search for hysterisis and non-uniqueness of the basic flow with the purpose to determine the critical value of the angle of attack, for which the bubble burst process takes place. The investigation will also consider the phenomenon of rotating stall, within the framework of the infinite-number-of-blades approximation. It will be incorporated with the existing numerical codes based on the single-passage assumption, to make the theory self-consistent.
