Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal seeks additional funding to enable a high power picosecond Nd YAG laser along with frequency tripling facilities to be purchased and installed on the new ToFsims instrument being constructed under GR/K44015. The purpose is to enable single photon ionisation of the sputtered neutrals neutrals VUV 118 nm radiation. The vuv source will have a high photon output enabling a three to four orders increase in ionisation efficiency as compared to SIMS. With this arrangement the aims of the original proposal will be fulfilled, namely that complex surface chemistry from delicate organic and bioorganic materials will be analysed at high soatial resolution. The laser and frequency tripling facilities will be acquired and matched to produce the VUV source in months 1 to 6 of the present proposal and installed on the new ToFSIMS instrument in month 7 (month 25 of the GR/K44015 project). After 2 months for testing and refinement of the full system, it will be used for 21 months of project research under GR/K44015.
